  • Seems stupid, if the service only speaks english surely the customers need to and if the food names are in english then whats the problem. I go to the chinese shop and order dim sims so arent I ordering in chinese?
  • I don't think that sign is any different than the signs that say "No talking on your cell phone while ordering" or "service will be denied if you are using a cell phone". Gino's shouldn't have been fined at all. Too many people are worried about being "pc" that they forget the bottom line. Gino's does a tremendous amount of fast paced business and I can first handedly understand the frustration if someone orders in another language. I had managed a retail store several years ago. Customers automatically assumed I spoke spanish because I was the "manager". I can count to 20, know a few colors, and can say no hablo espanol, but that's it. Even after telling the customer I don't speak spanish, she continued to talk to me in spanish and I grew more frustrated when she started yelling at me for not understanding her. The one employee I had who spoke spanish had the day off, and no one in the store knew spanish to help. I ended up say sorry and walking away. As I left, she yelled at the top of her lungs "You need to learn spanish!" I turned around and said "this is America- you need to learn English".
  • I agree with you to an extent Robinreola. It is the right to refuse service rule. But one thing I would like to say is if people would get off their asses and learn a new language we would not have the problem. There is no reason why people can't learn a few languages. At this exact moment there are six other languages that are considered more important in the business world than English. Not to mention that people that are multilingual are likely to get the jobs over people that just speak English.
  • No, I suppose that is the language he speaks and understands. What else could he do, short of hiring a translator
  • This sounds horribly like one of those hyped up "oh, how dare those PC Nazis try to control our lives!" media phenomena that is missing important facts about circumstance, and lacks any real implication for society at large.
  • He was fined? That just sounds crazy to me. You can put anything up that you want on your own property. What were the grounds for the fine?
