Because it unified the Greeks. The Spartans who fought at Thermopylae inspired the Greeks and made them go to arms

Mistake, after the thermopyles athens was burnt by the Persians. Spartans refused to help (and did well, none of them helped Leonidas). the reason is that 300 spartans AND 700 thespians kept an army of 1000000 persians. And listen to this. The persian king spied on the spartans. The spartans were cleaning themselves so that they would go clean to Adis. They were told that the arrows of the persians are so many, they would hide the sun. Good said the spartans, we will fight in the shadow. And when king Leonidas was asked to give their weapons, he responded μολÏŽν λαβÎ. Come and get them.

The battle at Thermopylae really was just a defeat for the Spartans. They didn't gain anything by fighting there except a few extra days, and it is not likely that the course of the war would have changed if the battle was not fought. However, the reason people still talk about it today is because it is an example of men defending their homeland against a much stronger invader, defying them to the end. People just eat that stuff up.

It was important because it bought the greeks time to rally all of their forces together. they were already unified against the persians. the main greek army won against the persiansduring the battle of plataea.

Because it was like the Alamo for the Americans. It delayed the Persians for a couple of days and gave the Greeks more time to prepare. It also inspired the Greeks to unite and fight the Persians.
