  • Because it represents all that we stand for and the majority of us are proud of that.
  • Because as a nation, we have adopted it as the symbol of freedom that we all believe in so strongly. Whenever we see it, we are reminded of what a great country we live in. The importance of our flag transcends words, so unless you experience the feeling, you will never understand.
  • I believe that many nations do have a strong attachment to their flag. It's common to associate one's self with an emblem. Simply look at sports fans who wear the logos of their local teams. I'm from Philadelphia and fans will say they bleed Eagle green. It doesn't matter who the players are or who the owner is. Once they wear the uniform they become "your" player. I think what is true is that other nations around the world don't have much respect for the American flag anymore and sadly, for good reason.
  • Because this country was founded and built by people from many different countries that hated where they were. They fought and suffered for their freedom, and the right to worship any religion they chose. They defied dictatorship because they knew that there was a better way of life somewhere else out from under communism. That flag symbolizes all the brave people that died so Americans can live free to this day.
  • I believe that the flag represents the rights & freedoms that are guaranteed in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Also, it symbolizes individual & personal liberties that are written in the Declaration of Independence.
  • Although the flag or any flag for that matter is just a piece of material it symbolizes not only who we are but what we believe in. many Americans respect the flag because we are proud of who we are and where we are. when we see others disrespecting the flag it is like they disrespect us as Americans. It isn't so much you burned our flag but the reason behind it. we burn our flag ourselves when it becomes torn and worn but it is done with respect. So others may not feel so strongly about their flag we can not explain why they don't and we do not understand why they don't. But that does not mean that American will disrespect another countries flag. So we don't just respect our flag but another's as well. You may ask why and it is because it shows who they are and what they believe in. We may not agree but we do respect it. We remain proud of the flag and see it as a badge of honor, it's a reminder to each of us all those who fought and died for the freedoms we share. Yes it is just a piece of cloth flapping in the wind to others but for us it is a little piece of each one of us that you do not see that is important to us.
  • Other people have strong attachment to their flags too. It represents their home and culture.
  • I dont think thats even nearly true. I'm British, and the Union Flag, for me is a symbol of my country, my freedom, and everything I (we) stand for as a nation. I'm sure every Brit feels the same.
  • On Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key peered through clearing smoke to see an enormous flag flying proudly after a 25-hour British bombardment of Baltimore's Fort McHenry. Key was inspired to write a poem, which was later set to music. Even before "The Star-Spangled Banner" became our national anthem, it helped transform the garrison flag with the same name into a major national symbol of patriotism and identity. Complete version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" showing spelling and punctuation from Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection. O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream, 'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - "In God is our trust," And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
  • This is a good question, Freddy. For me it is because from early memory in school we started every day with the Pledge of Allegiance..it meant something way back then. The flag was a symbol of unity, of history, of one nation. It's meaning has been damaged greatly as a result of some of the actions of a certain administration, along with subverting the Constitution and destroying the right to privacy. It no longer stands proud and tall for me...we need to make that happen again! :(
  • I assume you are young and have never been in the military. if so, you would not be asking this question.
  • It is a symbol that unites us as Americans. Maybe almost a rallying point, but we aren't the only ones to do this. Mexico for example has the same if not more of an attachment to their flag.
  • Because America is the strongest and mightiest nation on the face of the planet. The American flag demands respect and........... It gets it!
  • To many people it is a symbol of all that they hold dear. They assign it much value because they need an object to direct that veneration to. Some take it to the point of holding it in such a position of respect that they treat it like a diety. Have you read the rules for the flag? They treat the flag like a living breathing person or a God. I appreciate this country and the freedoms it grants me, but I also appreciate that this country is imperfect and has its faults. If the flag also truly is a representation of this country then it too is fallable and shouldn't be treated as an idol. With the pledge of allegiance, people are dedicating themselves to the flag or what it represents, the country, their patriotism, their nationalistic pride and zeal. They are pledging life and limb for this country... but can a Christian do that? I'm a Christian, and I've dedicated myself to God, can I also dedicate myself to a country and support everything it does even when I don't agree with it? Can you dedicate your life to two governments at the same time? Christians pray the Lords Prayer asking God to let his kingdom come... then dedicate their lives to this government (or kingdom) with their prayer of allegiance... I'm sorry, pledge of allegiance. The flag deserves respect for the country it represents and for the value that is assigned to it... but it doesn't deserve our worship and reverence.
  • I agree that it is way more than a battle symbol. I think that people hold it dear to them beacause they were taught to respect their nation. BY respecting their nation they respect their flag. With in the scale of respect you have the mild to the extreme. Others who were are not all about the country will not hold a symbol of the country in high regard. I can not say for sure why America seems to hold their flag in a higher place than others. One could say maybe it is because of being a nation that is constantly in the news, in other countries it just seems that way?> That other countries are not in the world news as much so they do not have the chance to show their love for their flag as much? Ps. SOrry to end my answer with a question.
  • It's representative of the struggles the country has gone through in its history. The people who have fought and sacrificed themselves for freedom. Much of this is being lost. When asked if people would serve the country if required (drafted) too many would just run away. It's not what it use to be. Semper Fi!
  • Other countries have laws regarding their display and use. So does the United States. If you tried to do with the Thai flag what has been done with the U.S. flag, you could easily do some serious prison time. -make socks -make panties -make a protective mask -toilet paper -write dirty words in it -make up some terrible symbols in it
