  • Apparently the song was originally known as "Blue Tail Fly," but it's also been called "De Blue Tail Fly" and "Jim Crack Corn." It's variously said to have first appeared in 1844 or 1846, and is generally attributed to Dan Emmett, who wrote a lot for the minstrel shows of the time.
