  • You must make sure that the cooling system is purged of air! An "air-locked" cooling system cannot efficiently circulate the coolant! Also, there's always the possibility of a defective thermostat. It's happened to me! I have owned operated an auto service center for 33 years! If the engine was severely over-heated the 1st time, there's the possibility of a head or head gasket problem! There is a special tester for that. Good Luck. • I got an '02 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6cyl 4x4, it's been over heating and I already replace the cooling fan relay, a $50 part 4 months ago. It still over heating during the winter months. I had diags run but they said nothing was wrong except an emissions sensor/leak. They told me to replace the thermostat but I do not think thats the problem, the fluid is circulating. What else could this be? The temp jumps up when the at idle, not moving forward and the electric fan does not even move.
  • I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee, 4.0L and have experienced the same type of issue but so far only when in idle for several minutes or traveling at a slow rate of speed for awhile. I too replaced the coolant, flushed the radiator and the thermostat. It is definately a circulation issue as I do not lose fluids and have discovered that it is necessary to replace the coolant return hose (if it is still factory one installed) as they had metal linings that tend to clog with rust particles. This explains the fact that there are moments when engine remains in operating heat range but will sometimes overheat. It's the damn in the hose so to speak. It's an inexpensive repair but could save lots of time & $.
  • I have a 2001 Jeep grand cherokee and it is over heating. I changed the thermostat, fan relay and the fan itself. The fan is not coming on when it reaches 210 degrees. I dont know what the problem is. Please help only overheats when idling.
