I do that in books a lot. The character developments are always more interesting when the villains have prominent roles in the plot (as in, not just some mystery villain who is unmasked in the end). In movies, I tend to be sympathetic toward the villains how have a sad story leading up to their villainhood.

Only if the villains are sharks/snakes/crocodiles/spiders or something because the acting is usually so bad.
