I would get a good English to Whatever Language dictionary, and try to learn some phrases that I would need to know. I'd also keep the dictionary with me, in case I needed to ask something, and couldn't get them to understand me.

I would attempt but when my parents when to Italy an Italian merchant told my father to please stop murdering his language and speak English. He understands and speaks Italian but no longer ever since that day.

I always try to have a few phrases of the local language and I can manage adequately in Spanish and French. It's normally appreciated although I have found the French to be deliberately awkward when seeming to be helpful. I remember asking in French for 500 grammes of something - "No, no, no - half a kilo", I was told. A couple of days later I put it to the test in another shop and asked for half a kilo, only to be told, "No, no, no - 500 grammes."

I try to pick up what I need to get around, but try English first.
