  • I believe that the best system is to have an automatic scan of the entire system each day and to check individual files that I have downloaded before I open them.
  • If you're referring to downloaded items, yes, do scan them before opening them. Though most Anti-viruses have a real-time scanner (that scans while downloading) I strongly suggest that you scan anything yourself. It takes a few seconds, but can save days and weeks of toil. Also, make sure to have a complete scan of your system at least once a week.
  • If you have a good firewall and anti-virus and a few good anti-spyware apps, then you don't need to be paranoid about every single thing you open. At the most you should scan your system every week. I do it every 1-2 months.
