I lived and worked in Israel and worked at a Barmitzva/functions place, as i'm not used to the heat i would work in the kitchen, with a short t-shirt and shorts. I then got hauled into the office and was told that the Rabbi was not happy about the way i dressed, so i covered myself up and nearly died of heat exhaustion, but i did respect their culture. Then whilst working with alot of russian waiters, they thought it was ok to keep asking me for paid sex and marriage for passports and basically tried treating me like a prostitute.....! a big culture shock for me :) I managed to learn some of the language and did adjust quite quickly.

I'm not sure that France would be classified as a radically different environment but I have been living here for 6 years now (I'm American). I've had hardly any negative reactions from the French because of my nationality, but plenty of positive. I am still learning the language. The adustment is on-going. Some moments I feel like I fit in and belong and other moments I ask myself what I am doing here.

Not really. I migrated from France to Germany and I work there. I mostly have positive responses. I could speak German before, but I took also some courses there to make it better. After one year, I could speak very good. But the real adjustment took at least 5 years.
