Foundation is more or less a make-up base that is applied to the entire face to even out skin tone, cover minor flaws, etc. Concealer is meant for spot treating major flaws (like a large pimple for example) and is not meant for the entire face.

I use to model for John Casablancas and stuff. I hated it, but they taught me to use the ring finger to apply foundation after spreading it evenly on your face with your hands. The ring finger is the weakest so it wont smudge what you did and it applys it more evenly. It always worked for me, but I don't wear makeup anymore.

Concealer is usually thicker than foundation, thats why its good for spot treatment. You should never apply a thick coat of concealer to a pimple, because it just makes it more obvious. Put on a thin coat to hide the redness, and then your foundation if you wear any.

The difference is in their ingredients. Concealers usually contain a much higher percentage of pigment than foundation does, therefore provide a better coverage.

Foundation is used on the whole of your face whereas concealer is just for certain areas ie: under your eyes and to cover spots and blemishes.

so if you're looking for an overall balanced skin tone while covering minor blemishes, go for foundation. if you're more the person that breaks out or has a few bothersome spots, concealers what's best for you. either way, both do their jobs in coverage and an overall finished appearance.
