Carly Simon did recently give up the name of who she wrote the song about. As a public we believe it to be Warren (Dick Tracy) Beatty. Carly gave the official name of the man/woman behind the lyrics of the song at a recent charity auction which I believe was held in Los Angeles for $1 million. The procedure for this great secret to be given away involved lawers, contracts and all sorts of clauses, as well as Carly actually whispering into the highest bidders ear. What would you buy if you had that sort of money?

In addition to the previous answer, the lawyer was able to tell one letter of the name to the public...and the letter he chose was E.

Have you seen most of her album covers? It should have been about her.

Here's a thought:  Carly Simon has been clear enough, it seems, that there is an actual person about whom the song was written.  It's widely thought that whomever this is, is someone famous.  What if it isn't.  What if it's some obscure person who she knew when she was a child, who never became famous at all?

I read an interview in a magazine a few years ago, and she said the song was actually about three men, and one indeed was Warren Beatty...the other two she wouldn't say

Mick Jagger. He even sang backup for this perfectly suited song.

Yes Jagger sings back up vox on 'you're so vain' - so surely he must be out of the equasion - would he sing back up on a derogatory song? - I don't think so.......
