I am not a meteorologist, but i watch the weather channel....a lot. here is my answer. rain means constant rain that is set in and will last a while. like a soaking rain. a shower is not a definite event. its like its raining across the street, but dry on this side. you can also run in and out of showers. rain is steady, from one location to another. a shower is not.

Showers are lighter the rain, i.e hammering down- rain, not much rain - showers
