My friend's 2001 Ford Ranger stops charging when it's hot. Replaced alternator and connector on alternator. When cold out, no problem.

You're reading I know they made Ranger FX4 in 2001-2003, but I saw some 2001-2003 Rangers that say 4x4 on them. Did they make Rangers that say 4x4 instead of FX4 in those years, or should I be wary of those?

Thats absolutley right, just a simple name change. I've owned 2 rangers, a 93 and an 01, they were both awesome vehicles. The 93 had 333000 kms on it when I sold it 5 years ago and I still see it driving around.

As noted by another answerer, the "FX4" indicates a trim level/option package.

If you want to do heavy duty off-roading (where you need skid plates and large tires), then the FX4 package is desirable. Otherwise, you can get a 4-wheel drive (4x4) Ranger without spending the extra money for the FX4 package.
