  • Humans evolved to have a sense of fair-mindedness. A similar tendency can be seen in the way many apes treat each other. The reason for fair-mindedness is that pre-humans and early humans lived in hunter-gatherer societies in which each individual depended on the generosity and cooperation of others in the group. The groups that treated each other best were most likely to survive and propagate their "benevolence genes." Morality, then, is simply society's codification of this genetic tendency towards benevolence. Incidentally, our hunter-gatherer origins also explain our tendency towards tribalism/nationalism, and our often irrational xenophobia - competition between groups for scarce resources.
