If you have never had fish before then I strongly urge you to start out with fresh. Salt tanks require a lot more work and you may discover that you are not too keen on keeping fish. A fresh tank is a good starter system, lets you get the basics of general health and feeding and tank problems and solutions. Start small, and work your way up. Especially if you are buying all knew equipment: tanks, filters, pumps, heaters, lights - very expensive hobby more expensive for salt water tanks

I agree with Athrael. Much better to "try" the hobby with freshwater. For tanks, bigger is better for a number of reasons.
