  • It's one word as far as I'm concerned, simply because then I have no need for an extra keystroke by putting the space in. I'm all about saving energy :)
  • It should be one word, or at least a hyphened word, since either word by itself wouldn't work. I think it was, at one time, 'web site' and has slowly migrated to the closed form. This is often the case with words like this.
  • How is it that this question "Is website two words or one (web site?)" was rated +5 then -5? What about it wasn't "helpful"?
  • It's two words. Web is short for World Wide Web. A proper name. So, Web is capitalized. A site is a page or pages that can be on the Web or elsewhere. However, common usage has made it acceptable to use website. I do not capitalize it here, not sure if you would, since it's a mash up of a proper name and an object.
  • Theoretically, web site should be two words, since, despite Lil Miss Know-it-all's response, each of the words DO work when standing alone. For example, a spider's web or a construction site or an historic site or a web of deceit. And yes, web should be capitalized (although I haven't seen that for quite a while) since it is short for World Wide Web, just as Internet is a specific place (proper noun). I will now post this response to the Answerbag Internet site.
  • Web site, with Web capitalised. I work at a newspaper. It's AP style. Hellokittycat has the explanation for why, though.
