It really depends. Just a couple of examples: You can read about crimes, murders, etc. and learn a lot. Do you really want to experience something like that? If you enjoy the outdoors, traveling, meeting people, a book can show you but can't give you the full experience.

I can see both sides of this issue, but I am going to go with experiencing it for yourself.
