I don't know about limes but i do know that a real lemon works. Cut the lemon into quarters then rub it on the parts of your hair that you what to highlight. Sit in the sun with your hair in the direct sunlight. You might need to do this for a few days in a row.

use real lemon juice and then blowdry with your hair damp with lemon juice.
