PIO stands for Programmed Input/Output. Your computer is always taking in information (Input) and sending out information (Output). The oldest way to tranfer data over the IDE/ATA interface is by using programmed I/O. This is when the CPU and it's support hardware directly control the transfer of data between your system and your hard disk. The modes are the different speeds of programmed I/O.
