Aside from actually going to a dentist, when do you know that you just need a filling, or if you need a root canal (pain wise)?

They are both similar feelings, but a tooth needing a root canal is much more sensitive to cold things, like ice cubes, cold drink, sometimes even just air passing through...

Luckily I have never had a filling, I am hoping the day is a long way off.

Pain is a good indicator. If you need a root canal the pain is often far worse, often caused by an abcess. It's usually the sort of pain that isn't helped by regular pain killers.
