How can I change the Freon in my air conditioner myself? Is there a kit sold at auto stores?

You can't do this responsibly, without a refrigerant recovery system. They cost quite a bit of cash and you need to know what you're doing, when charging the system. Get a pro to do this for you.

- Not true. You can get a kit at any auto parts store to let you do this. It's easy to do, and it's not terribly expensive. See my answer.

��Nearly all auto parts stores, and some larger department stores with automotive sections, sell a kit that can be used to recharge R13a-based air conditioning systems.� It's not terribly expensive, nor is it particularly difficult to do.� The kit will include complete instructions.

- That's where I was going with my answer Bob. If it IS charged with R12 then he's just committed a crime by not recovering it (it's a crime here in Canada). Safest to let a certified mechanic to make that call.

You should also check to ensure that is the problem. That's what we assumed our problem was as well. Once it was looked at, it was determined to be something else. Your best bet is to find a mechanic who will do a "free" check up for you.
