You can't do this responsibly, without a refrigerant recovery system. They cost quite a bit of cash and you need to know what you're doing, when charging the system. Get a pro to do this for you.

Nearly all auto parts stores, and some larger department stores with automotive sections, sell a kit that can be used to recharge R13a-based air conditioning systems.  It's not terribly expensive, nor is it particularly difficult to do.  The kit will include complete instructions.

      For an example, see:   http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=3571&mfrcode=IDN&mfrpartnumber=RGM134CS

If you have an older car that uses R12 refrigerant, then that's tougher.  R12 is now strictly regulated, and very scarce and expensive.  There are kits available to convert most R12 systems to use R134a.  I've never installed such a kit, and I cannot vouch for anything regarding how easy or difficult they are to use, or how well they work.   http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=3571&mfrcode=IDN&mfrpartnumber=RKR7TR8

You should also check to ensure that is the problem. That's what we assumed our problem was as well. Once it was looked at, it was determined to be something else. Your best bet is to find a mechanic who will do a "free" check up for you.
