If you've got something to do, tell them, "ok, I've gotta do this, I'll talk to you later." Pretty easy. I boot people out all the time.

If it's during the day, you can always pretend that you need to leave. Offer to walk them to their car. That might work. If it's at night, start yawning and rubbing your eyes. Then look at the clock and look surprised "Holy sh*t, is that the time, I need to be in bed, gotta wake up in 6 hours" That outta give them a clue. Worst case scenario, if they don't get it, tell them you enjoyed their visit and would love to catch up more soon, but you gotta get some stuff done. If they still don't get it, put them to work. It would not be rude of you, it is more rude of them to overstay their welcome.

you just say in a nice voice that you have enjoyed their company and that you don't mean to be rude but you would like some time to yourself. if its to do something else or just to sit back and relax say that if they are your friend they will understand if they don't then you have to wonder another way is think about how you would like to be told

We had someone that did that, and we simply said, honey, you can stay with us as long as we know when you will be leaving. (Assuming, that there stay was for days).
