  • If you mean does bleach kill the virus on surfaces, yes. parvo is passed by contact with infected stool or saliva. Cleaning the environment inside will definitely help, as will carefully gathering all the faeces when your dog goes outside. I don't know who told you that the shot could kill an infected dog -- that's simply not true. In fact, you should have all your dogs vaccinated as soon as they are old enough, and renew the vaccinations on schedule. Failing that, preventive vaccination or infusion has saved many a life at our little shelter when a puppy brought parvo into the place.
  • Firstly, really small dogs such as Chihuahuas are harder to treat, because their low body weight works again them. Parvo causes most dogs to lose a lot of weight, and if your dog only weighs a few pounds to begin with, this level of weight loss can cause serious issues. Secondly, we have read some websites where people recommend treating Parvo by giving your dog bleach. We hope we don't need to say that, even when diluted, bleach is toxic and should not be given to any animals. (Would you drink it, yourself?) Next, we are seeing many customers whose dogs are given Parvo shots, only to come down with Parvo almost immediately. The shot itself won't kill the dog, but it can increase their chances of contracting Parvo. This is because the shot contains a modified version of the live virus (in most cases), while at the same time the vaccination works by lowering the dog's natural immune system. This leaves an easy entry for real viruses to infect your dog. Also, the first one or two Parvo shots are rarely effective because the maternal antibodies that are still in the puppy's body will typically kill the modified live virus before the puppy has any time or chance to develop immunity on its own. With the latest 2c strain of Parvo, even fully-vaccinated adult dogs are being infected by and dying from this virus. The only vaccine that we are aware of that has been 100% challenged-tested against the 2c strain is PROGARD. Current research also indicates that vaccination can cause long-term health issues for your dog. This includes a weakened immune system (which of course opens up the dog to all sorts of other illnesses and viruses), as well as chronic inflammation, which is now known to be a contributory factor to cancer. So, rather than inject our dogs with a bunch of chemicals that could do more harm than good, we simply have an adequate supply of safe, chemical-free, herbal products (e.g. Parvaid, Vibactra Plus, Life Cell Support and Pet's Pain Formula) on hand at all times, then if the worst did happen and any or all of our eight dogs did get Parvo, we'd begin treatment immediately.
