  • It is battery or a low grade assault, but if she is charged with any sort of hate crime I will call the local authorities and express my discontent.
  • I would consider it as a simple assault and would have her so charged ... in India, it would be much more severe.
  • um... what the hell... not sure.. she sounds mentally ill. Assault for ripping it off his head... and some therapy to deal with reality.
  • i think her arrest should have been enough-maybe not even that as hopefully a bunch of people jumped in and informed her of her ignorance-some people shouldnt go out in public----just my thoughts-smile and enjoy the day
  • She should get some help, and maybe talk to some people who think that her showing more than her eyes make them "uncomfortable". Throw her in the pit!
  • She should take the WRAP.
  • She should have to wear a turban for six months so she can get comfortable with them.
  • She should be charged with assault and battery and with all due process be punished to the extent allowed by law. Since when is the world designed for HER comfort? Sheesh what an arrogant, self-centered, narcissistic ditz.
  • she should be charged with assault and any hate crime that can be attached. That's disgusting.
  • Considering it was at a bar... I'm sure alcohol was involved. I don't think that she should be charged with assault and battery, seeing as you don't mention that she actually struck the man. I do think it was harassment and she should be treated as harassing and provoking an argument (which I don't think is very punishable). I see it in the same light (legally) as someone knocking my MSU baseball cap off my head because they are a UofM fan. A ridiculous effort to provoke a fight or argument. It is a bit more serious though in its undertones, because it wasn't the turban itself that bothered her but the religious significance it represented about the man and his faith... like a cross necklace would say about a person you don't know... it identifies them of a certain faith. For that I think she needs to sober up and go to counceling... and rethink her friends that allowed her to or egged her into doing something of this nature.
  • Seems like she was suitably punished (as long as she was charged with simple assault)...it also seems that more and more people are getting away with infringing upon the rights of others because they are "offended" and/or made "uncomfortable" by their beliefs or practices.
  • She should be banned from the bar.
  • What do you mean "what should happen to her" ....she was already arrested for it.
  • Fifty lashes with a wet noodle !!!
  • I agree with the others, she should be charged with assualt but I would add that she should have to do community service to an agency or organization that she is 'uncomfortable' with, so she can learn to develop a better understanding.
  • That is so messed up. Seriously, the world does not revolve around her needs. Charge her with assault and battery. That is just stupid.
  • It is physical assault and should be treated as such. I would say a charge of ABH is needed, ABH = Actual Bodily Harm.
  • It smells of "assault" and should be dealt with accordingly, otherwise men could just beat women down at random, should they find a covered vagina to be offensive to them. It's nonsense, at best.
  • charges needs to be brought against her for assault, and disturbance of the peace.
  • Sounds like she's got a problem with courtesy. She had no business ripping his turban off. That's assault and she'll have to answer for it.
  • Sounds like assault to me. I'm not going to rip someones lip/eye/nose/tounge ring out because I feel uncomfortable about it (I don't feel that, btw) or take someones glasses off because I don't like them. Its just headgear to most, but it might be his religion. If that was in the USA, I thought thats what our founding fathers fought for in the FIRST place. The freedom of speech, religion, the press, etc.
  • She should be charged and prosecuted. Just because someone wears a turban does not make them anything other than just another person with the same rights that everyone else has. Put it like this: If you were wearing a baseball cap and I came up to you in a bar and ripped it off your head, wouldn't you be mad?
  • She physically assaulted someone, and (from the information you've provided) it was based on a stereotyped fear. It could go either way, a hate crime or simple assault. I'd have her arrested and released. Quick trial and minor fine. If she does it again, there is potentially a pattern. Perhaps she will learn to accept that people have different views and beliefs in life.
  • Apparently New Jersey is a hornet's nest for racially charged events.
  • It sounds to me like Hansdip Singh Bindra is an indian Al Sharpton or jesse jackson who create incidences to get their names in print. A New Jersey woman was arrested Wednesday for trying to pull the turban off of a Sikh man in a restaurant, a police spokesman said. Carrie Covello of Hoboken was charged with bias intimidation and harassment, said Detective Sgt. Mike Costello, public information officer at the Hoboken Police Department. Covello, 37, was released just after midnight Thursday morning after being served summons to appear in court. Covello could not be reached for comment. But according to the police report, she was arrested for trying to yank off Hansdip Singh Bindra’s turban as he was ordering a drink at the Madison Bar and Grill, also in Hoboken. “I was surprised when I turned around and saw a female,” said Hansdip Singh of Union City. She had come up behind him, grabbed his dastaar and just about pulled it off when, in a spontaneous reaction, he wrapped his left arm around it. “It was 80 percent off,” Hansdip said. “My hair was out of my fifty and in the back.” But this is not the first time Hansdip Singh, 38, has been harassed. In 2003, he sued Delta Airlines when a flight attendant flagged him to other passengers as a possible threat. According to his statement in the Newark district court, she told him people from the Middle East should keep a low profile. He was also told to “shut up,” “stay seated” and “(not) cause any problems.” That case was settled out of court. Then, in 2006, Hansdip Singh had an incident in a restaurant in Richmond, Va. The management of the Richbrau Brewing Co. told him he had to remove his "hat" before he would be allowed inside, according to a report from the Richmond Times Dispatch. All three incidents have garnered local print and broadcast media coverage. “My job is not to be in the news,” Hansdip said. “I’m doing this so the next generation doesn’t have to face this kind of (bias).” About the bar incidents, Hansdip volunteered that he is not a very observant Sikh. He drinks and he trims his beard. But he does wear his turban over his unshorn hair. And he will stand up for his faith. No one, he said, should be treated like this. “People should learn there are consequences to their actions, that they might go to jail,” Hansdip said. Reporting these incidents makes people think twice before they try a criminal activity. Back at the bar, when Hansdip turned around and confronted his attacker, she said: “Why do you have that thing on your head? Take it off.” Hansdip told the bouncers what had happened, walked out of the restaurant and called the police. Covello was arrested and taken to the Hoboken Police Department where she admitted to officers she had tried to knock Hansdip’s turban off. According to the police report, Covello said she didn’t mean anything by it. If convicted, Covello could be given probation or up to 18 months in state prison depending on whether she has a prior conviction, said Debra Simon, deputy first-assistant prosecutor at Hudson County's Brennan Court House. Hansdip later reported the incident to the Sikh Coalition, a New York-based advocacy organization. The Coalition’s online database shows 47 incidents of bias against Sikhs in New Jersey since September 11, 2001.
  • She should be rapped upside the head and told to get over herself.
  • Some kind of simple assult charge. The DA should waive a hate crime charge at her to get her attention.
  • dare you to yank this man's turban off!
  • So when we see a Republican in a gay bar, we rip off his flag pin?
  • She should be charged with assault. He would have been well within his rights to have given her a smack down.
  • If a woman on a beach is wearing a thong and it makes me uncomfortable, can I rip it off?
  • rinvor...Muslin is a type of finely-woven cotton fabric, introduced to Europe from the Middle East in the 17th century. * The scripture of Sikhism is not any revelation from God but only the compositions of the Gurus as well as those of certain Muslim and Hindu mystics. For this reason, there is no meaning in talking about the authenticity of the book as a Divine Revelation. Because neither the book nor the authors claim it to have been revealed by God. * As Muslims, we can perform da`wah to the Sikhs, chiefly by appealing to their faith in the Oneness of God. We can tell them that Guru Nanak was most probably a Muslim when he died; the available evidence favors that conclusion. Anyway he did not try to replace Islam with a new religion; on the other hand, his utterances point to the fact that he certainly believed Islam to be the True Religion of God. And Allah knows best.
  • That is disgusting. She should stay arrested.
  • Ask the man wearing the turban!
  • That is technically a battery, which is any unautorized touching of another person, or of anything they are holding. In my humble opinion, she should be prosecuted.
  • Wow...a good bitch slap, maybe??
