The only other possibility is that the universe does not go on forever. The universe goes a limited distance, and then...POOF! no more universe. My reasoning for that is: there is nothing between forever and not forever. Either it is or it isn't. If you don't think that it does go on forever, then it doesn't. If it doesn't go on foever, it must be limited.

There are 3 main theories about the 'shape' of the time-space continuum: 1) It is flat and goes on forever. 2) It is wavy and goes on forever 3) It is balled like the surface of a planet (hypersphere) and does not go on forever. The latter is the most widely accepted theory. This is shown by how matter spreads out from an explosion, not following a straight line but a curved one as if it is travelling along the surface of a 4D sphere.

I cannot provide you scientific reasoning as to the size or scape of the universe, only personal logic. the universe cannot possibly end. imagine the universe encompassed or contained in a large sphere; which would then be the end of the universe. what is beyond it? logically there has to be something. in theory it continues infinitely.

In Stephen Hawking's book, A Brief History of Time, he mentions an old lady's theory. A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!" Personally, I'm not sure what to believe about the universe going on and on forever. Maybe it does, but it seems like there is more to it than we are able to grasp.

1) some theories of mine: - the whole universe could have an end. - the part of the whole universe that we can explore could have an end - the universe could have and end and start again - the universe could go to an end and start the same again - the universe could part into two separate universes having no more contact in the future - the known universe could encounter another universe and combine with it - we could discover that time is just an illusion (there are certainly many more) 2) "The ultimate fate of the universe is a topic in physical cosmology. Many possible fates are predicted by rival scientific theories, including futures of both finite and infinite duration. Once the notion that the universe started with a Big Bang became accepted by a consensus of scientists, the ultimate fate of the universe became a valid cosmological question, one depending upon the physical properties of the mass/energy in the universe, its average density, and the rate of expansion. By extension, the fate of the universe is also a significant theme in science fiction." We are just a scince experiment that went too well. The scientists are frantically adding to our maze so that we have more things to do.
