  • It may be shellac as produced by the lac bug. It grows in the Asian tropical region. Its actually a secretion (poop) of the lac bug. The other one I know is lacquer used in china which is really a resin (and not insect poop). But the tree needs cold mountain weather to thrive so it may not be it. Shellac needs ethanol to be melted and it makes a decent but not too stable finish on dark wood. With gum arabic, linseed oil and turpentine its known as French Polish. Pretty, warm, an old world classic but obsolete.
