  • He used his given name of Tom Riddle and mixed up the letters.
  • Tom Marvolo Riddle
  • Yes, it's an anagram, but it's also supposed to suggest flight of death or will of death.
  • Tom Marvolo Riddle Mix it up and it is: I am Lord Voldemort I don't believe that they ever put a meaning in the books, though.
  • It is an anagram of Tom Marvolo Riddle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Voldemort
  • this is in the second film. he writes i am lord voldemort. and it means is name tom marvolo riddle
  • Who cares?
  • Let's break it down like this: Lord-better than you. Volde- he probably meant vole, or mole. Let's go with mole. Mort-That has something to do with death, doesn't it? So the basic message is this: Dead Moles are better than you.
  • I read the answers about it being an anagram, which is interesting, but I think that Rowlings has also made a pun...vol (fly) de (from) mort( death.
  • Voldemort is French for 'flight from death'
  • J.K Rowling originally intended the "t" at the end to be silent, and then the mor at the end means death in French. Therefore his name actually is death in French. I think this name is actually quite accurate!:)
  • I am definitely of the school that this is not a simple anagram. If you were picking a serious name for your nefarious ego, I doubt it would be a random anagram. If you were an author picking a character's name, it would certainly not be a random product of accidental letter jumbles. Consider that she probably named "Lord Voldemort" before she devised Riddle or Malvolo - they are the anagram extractions. "Will of Death"/"Will for to kill" is far more defensible in respect to the plot of the series than "Flight of Death" which sounds like the working title of a lame B-grade slasher movie. Moreover, I think the most bold fact toward this name being intentional is that it represents a pretty typical educated English person's attitude toward the French, and pseudo-knowledge of the French language.
  • Voldemort, it means flight from death, from Catalan Vol de Mort.
