Question

Help answer this question below.

I have seen the phrase " the penalty box" quite a few times in the last two days. Can someone please explain to me what is the penalty box and what it is used for? Is this some kind of correction method that is employed in Answerbag?

A Massive waste of time... I've just got out of the penalty box, 2nd time i've been in there. They just randomly ban you but don't tell you what you've said/done wrong.. and give you a vague reason like "Offending other users" - On a website like this where people often express totally opposite views on things, surely that's inevitable?

It's hard not to re-offend when you don't particularly know what you did wrong in the first place...

Yes, it is a form of penalizing an ABer for a certain period of time due to violations of AB's terms of use. An ABer's account is restricted during this period.

Violations include: Spamming, too much rejected flags, perpetuating a conflict and impersonating other users. There might be other reasons, but I don't know them all.

Answerbag seems to have very few staff moderators, so policing the site is generally done by ordinary members reporting submissions that are spam, offensive, nonsense, etc. If the staff agree with the report the member responsible has his or her access to the site curtailed for a period of time - ranging from a day to forever.

The person concerned can log onto his or her account, but can't post anything - this is called being in the Penalty Box.

Apart from the staff moderators a few members (the so-called Community Leaders) can also put people in the Penalty Box, but to put it into perspective, in the past few days several hundred spammers have had their accounts put in the Penalty Box (from where they are normally nuked), but only a tiny proportion of that number of ordinary members have been put in the box - mainly for disregarding the rules of polite conversation and insulting/swearing at other users.

The Penalty Box is Answerbag's version of jail. It is so frustrating to be in it, especially if you don't even understand why you're there. You cannot respond to ANY of your messages. You cannot ask questions, answer questions, or comment on anything. You can't even contact the AB staff via messages. If you actually browse the site, you get to watch everyone else have fun while you can only do some things (like vote on polls, like questions and answers, read questions, read answers, read comments, update your profile, change your screen name, etc). If you try to do what you're not allowed to do, AB gives you a page that calls you a slugger and reminds you that you're in the box and how long it will take for you to be out. It feels so long, even if it's a short amount of time.
