The idea was put forward by the Early Church Fathers from the first century along. They considered laugh as a sin. And consequently the last laugh would be the one of God when the soul of the sinner would arrived and judged. The catholic church slowly changed her mind from the 13° century on, when some prominent thinkers like for instance Thomas Aquinas, when reading then the newly rediscovered Atistotle, introduced a distinction between an evil laugh and a good natural laugh. So now, things have changed. He who laughs last is generally the slower to get the joke.
