Don't rush it. Realize it's not bad to be shy. Realize that you cannot change overnight. I suggest starting with a close circle of friends that you know you can trust, where they give you the time to open up and help you out. I'm talking about patient and trustworthy people. Being forced to open up is just not cool at all. A lot of people, I think, think they are comforting you when they tell you not to be shy, but really they are just annoying you. Well, they're probably annoying you anyway. If you became my friend and lived in the same area as me, I would probably introduce you to new people that are really nice, and then eventually get you to introduce yourself. I think it would provide a good environment that would help make you feel comfortable in that sort of situation. :)

I used to be very shy, especially around the opposite gender. What I did was I had a goal. At a particular evening at church I would purpouse as a goal to talk to maybe 3 or 4 girls that I had not met before and start a conversation. I did that for a while, Now I am a very social person I just got used to it, its nothing now.
