  • I would highly recommend you go see your doctor. Problems with your nails usually mean health problems. no amount of filing will likely help. This isn't meant to scare you.. just meant for you to check it out.. it maybe nothing, but your doc is the best person to answer that.
  • It sounds like it's just a problem with your cuticles, without the cuticles, your nails can't grow smoothly and healthily so they form ridges - hot water and cleaning chemicals are enough to damage cuticles and kill them off, you may need to see a doctor for some cream to condition them and help them grow back, also avoid contact with too hot water and chemicals with your nails.
  • These ridges are common as we age. In women, the use of over-the-counter progesterone cream (www.puritan.com has a good one) used regularly on the nail and into the cuticles will slowly cause the ridges to grow out. The improvement takes place over 6-12 months or more, and the worse the ridges, the slower the resolution.
  • Vertical nail ridges, which extend from your cuticle to the tip of your nail, are fairly common and often become more numerous as you age. Vertical ridges in your nails are not a health concern. Although the exact cause of such ridging isn't known, heredity may play a role. If your fingernails change color or develop horizontal ridges, see your doctor. These changes may indicate underlying health problems, such as respiratory disease, malnutrition or even heart attack.
