First of all what you want to do is see if you can back up your hard drive (usb link or use another monitor) If the screen isnt really broken, just try leaving it off for awhile and turn it on. If that doesnt work, either take it in somewhere (geek squad or what not) or you can reinstall Windows. But my first thought would be that your screen took a dump and you out of luck. Sorry.... welcome to the down fall of laptops. My last one did kinda the same thing.

Here's a thought. Perhaps it's overheated? When a graphics card overheats, it can glitch up and produce strange things (called "artefacts" sometimes) on the display. Have you tried shutting it down and leaving it for a while? Batman's right; back up your hard drive now, just in case.

Check your monitor, you may need another one. BTW, how old is your PC and monitor.

It's going to be pretty annoying to try and back up data with it in it's current condition plus it's doubtful the hard drive is in any danger. I would simply run through the list of things to check. 1) Is the screen actually cracked? Can you see breaks in it? 2) Does it work when you plug an external monitor into the VGA / DVI port on your laptop? (Screen problem) 3) If you leave it off for a while and then power it up a few hours later does it work? (Overheating issue) 4) Does the picture come back if you press on the screen in any place or when you swing the lcd up or down (go the full range). (Fraying wire or dislodged connector) This is a good start at least. After that you will prob have to open it up and start checking things out in there.
