Is it true that if you spit into a newborn puppy's mouth, it will never forgot you?

I have a one year old lab. She is wonderful and she is already a people-pleaser and is submisive with other dogs, so she's already wonderful inately. I heard this 'wives tale', which as I understand it is actually an old Native American practice. My mother had a flat tire and the tow driver who helped her was Native American Indian and had a dog in the truck and they began to talk dogs and he told her that the gesture of spitting in a puppy's mouth will "make it yours forever." I did this with our new puppy right from the get go. Lainey (my lab) is BEYOND loyal to me. The childern and my husband can be downstairs in the am, and she'll go down to go out to potty, but she'll come right back up to my bed and won't go down stairs for the day until I do. Be SURE you want a furry shadow though. Lainey has difficulty being away from me, which I hadn't anticipated. I am a SAHMom though, so she spends most time with me. So be warned that loyaly comes hand-in-hand with emotional dependence! (And be careful that puppy doesn't manage to return the favor and slip you some tounge... all puppies get carried away with affection!!) Good luck

Are you just looking for a reason to spit at someone?

Thats nasty, and mean spirited.

I dont know about that and wouldnt wanna try. But I know and have known elephants and cobras dont forget. King cobras always remember you if you try to hit or kill them. They will come afteryou for years and years. eventually get you if you had killed a cobra at all in your life time. elephants always remember where there parents die or get buried.

gag if you spit in my mouth I'd never forget nor forgive you. poor puppy. Actually dogs mouths are cleaner than humans by far.
