Yeah...IMO, the mafia is responsible for the creation of about 95% of all gun control laws in the U.S.

Maybe, maybe not. Jus'faggedabowdit.
-
Of course. It is called organised crime. Operates everywhere.

The Mafia is still present but I'm sure it operates on a much smaller scale. They used to blatantly run Vegas, parts of NYC, Chicago, and other areas for a long time until authorities started to really crack down. Like others said however, they've largely gone underground and are more careful nowadays in having legal front businesses, etc. For example, Al Capone was thrown in federal prison for income tax evasion because he had no legal income. That doesn't really happen anymore as most mobsters have some form of legal income in addition to the money that's made from gambling, prostitution, extortion, etc. Besides, the Mafia is only one of many organized crime syndicates. You also have the Russian Mafia, the Mexican Mafia, the Mara Salvatrucha (highly organized Salvadoran gangsters), Chinese organized crime (just go to Chinatown in NYC), and other ethnic criminal organizations.
