The main reason (so I heard) was that auto manufacturers began building cars with less headroom, in order to save on materials. People could no longer wear their hats while they were driving, and it became impractical to have to leave them on the seat next to you while driving. So people simply stopped wearing them.

I don't know that that is true - I still see a ton of baseball caps and stetsons!

I think,simply hats and such are out of fashion,and too much bother for people a constantly loosing them.

I watched a program that was about the influence of Hollywood on fashion. It had an interesting take on the hat issue. JFK did not wear a hat to his inauguration and hats became less popular from that time on. I think they may have a valid point.
