If you're unable to repair it, I have an extra lava lamp that's going to be thrown out next time I'm motivated enough to bring it downstairs. Try cooling the lamp a lot. The lava floats or sinks based on its temperature. Maybe if you put some ice packs on the top of the lamp, that will force the lava to sink again.

This happened to my son's lamp after he left in on for a couple of days - it never recoved. You can try shaking it twelvety million times, or throw it away and get yourself a new one:(

That happens when the lava gets too hot and changes it's chemical structure. It is ruined. Pitch it and get another. ;(
-
Mine does that, although it is possible to get it to sink back down after it's hardened.

Sounds like it's Kaput;(.....

Ancient Hawaiian wisdom: Shaking the lava lamp upsets Madam Pele, goddess of fire, and she will only make ugly lava for you.

Put the lamp in a pot of very hot (lightly boiling) water (keep it hot for a while). The lava (wax) will become balls again and it will work again. Never shake the lamp, it makes things worse.

If the lava in your lamp is sticking or doesn't move at all, the wax has gone off, and you'll need to buy a new one - sorry about that!
