You can cover with a plate that is microwave and oven safe..Then it will be able to handle the heat...
You can find a replacement, most larger stores (Target, Walmart etc) sell the actual pots for the crock pots.
Also, see if you have any corning ware dishes with lids the same size. I have one and the lid to it and the crockpot are the same.
You can probably find a replacement lid on eBay or elsewhere online. You can try the foil and see if it works, it can't hurt.
Be prepared for condensation from steam to possibly escape around the foil and drip down the side of the pot. You may want to place a dish towel around the pot to catch the moisture.
