  • As far as I know, hawks that catch ground-living animals either break their neck by hitting very hard from above, or strangle with their powerful talons. In the first case it would be instantaneous, in the second it would not be vary long. If the hawk does not get a good grip at the first try, it is not well equipped for fighting on the ground, so it will give up and fly away. I am sorry for the loss of your cat, but she probably did not suffer much.
