I lived in the Arctic circle for a couple of years and asked that very question. Those women credit themselves with inventing the first disposable diapers. They collected and dried moss over summer months. Babies were outfitted with a leather panty, which was stuffed wtih this dried moss. The panty was fairly waterproof, like old time rubber pants. And when the moss was soiled, it was tossed and the pants stuffed with fresh moss.

Two other possibilities: Leaves padded around the bottom and tied with plants or animal hide thongs. Nothin...babies just do their thing whenever they need to, and mother wipes off the crap with leaves. Urine just dries wherever it lands. No...it doesn't smell pretty in these places.
