I think the Corporate versions of both McAfee and Symantec (Norton) are pretty decent but the home versions tend to be less effective and more bloated. Generally you can install one AV on top of another. I have run AVG alongside almost every other AV product without issue. Since AVG is free, you could use it as an interim AV between uninstalling your old one and putting in the new one. Then just dump it if you don't want it. It's pretty resource light though.

I do the free AVG over the regular version since it does all that I want and takes up less resources. The non-free version is a little more RAM hungry since it tries to do more. Hence me going with AVG free and A/S separately. Hope that wasn't all too confusing ;)
