Where did the idea come from for toys/dolls to come alive and become scary knife-wielding monsters?

I don't know when the 1st one came out. I really hate gory movies, but do like suspenseful and scary movies. The first one I can remember that I actually watched, was in the movie "Trilogy of Terror" which was 3 different stories, all staring Karen Black. One story, called "Amelia" where she is terrorized by a Zuni fetish doll that comes to life! So scary and suspenseful...but not like the gruesome blood and guts garbage you see these days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilogy_of_Terror

The idea comes from the fact that some people find dolls, ventriloquists' dummies and/or clowns really creepy (including me). I just did a survey on AB and found a surprising number of folks that share this feeling.
