yep. That was my 1st real car.... Loved it. It has proven to be a great advantage!
-
I used to but I really dislike them as I prefer the ease and simplicity of automatic transmission. I'm sure I could relearn if I had to but I prefer not to drive that way. I still have fun with my regular old car.
-
Not even close. I get confused by the turtle and rabbit on a lawn mower.
-
Every car I've ever owned has been stick, and I love it. Driving automatic cars feels weird to me when I drive one. And I feel lazy in an automatic. My car makes me work for each gear!
-
While my current vehicle has an automatic transmission, the VAST majority of the vehicle I have owned in my life were stick-shift. Manual transmissions cost less, get better mileage, are more reliable and are more fun to drive than automatics. However, I must admit the new "DSG"-type automatic-manual hybrids are tempting... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox
-
Yes, they're alot of fun. But not on a steep hill!
-
Yes, I learned how to drive on a stick but I'm a bit out of practice now.
-
nope
-
I had to learn how to drive on a stiff shift to placate my father and my older brothers. I did own a stick shift car back in the late sixties but every car that I have owned since then has been automatic transmission.
-
Yes, but I hate doing it. I learned on a manual, a half century ago, and one of the cars I have today is a manual.
-
Yes, but I haven't for years.
-
Yes, and it is fun once in a while. I can get my kicks at work. My daily driver is an automatic. My wife drives a stick and loves it.
-
drove the same four-speed car from tiajuana mexico to vancouver british columbia on highway 1. then drove it back through highway 10 in the central valley. had my grandmother part of the way, my father the rest. great days.
-
I have learned, but It was several years ago. I've occasionally driven one. My husbands pickup truck is a 5-speed. He usually insists I try to drive it at least once a winter.
-
I learned when I was 17 years old.
-
yep, and it's by far my preference.
-
Oh yes !! The first vehicle ( Truck) I ever drove was a 3 speed on the column in a '57 Chevy pickup( On the farm) when I was about eleven or twelve. I've driven a little bit of just about everything!
-
Yep - when the first few cars you own cost less than $1000 you learn to drive a stick
-
Yes. I prefer them after constantly being fed up with automatics thinking the right gear is different than the one it's currently in, then downshifting without warning, or refusing to upshift. I have had an auto hold 3rd gear at over 100km/h for about 10km before I had to let off the gas quickly for it to upshift. Also, going up a snowy hill with snow tires on it was doing fine in 3rd, not lugging, no wheel spin, then it all of a sudden decided to shift down to 1st. You can guess what happened - got stuck. With a manual you can pick the right gear and hold it as long as you want. Plus I personally find that most cars have more power with a manual compared to a slushbox.
-
Certainly.
-
Yup. Learned when I was 10. Never driven an automatic.
-
Yes. Current vehicle has a 13 speed road ranger transmission in it ( tractor trailer ).
-
I learned to drive a manual all on my own. My husband's father was caretaker at the city dump in Stockton, CA. He handed me the keys to my husband's truck and said "Now go out into the dump and stay out there till you can drive it." It took me almost all day, but I finally figured it out after killing the engine and jerking my neck half off about a hundred times.
-
I think its default in the UK to drive a gear stick car, and I haven't seen many autos. And I learn in an stick.
-
Yes, I was taught how to drive on a manual by my father. Burned out the clutch, he was sooo mad! My mustang was a stick, but I've since had to get another vehicle which is automatic. I still reach for the gear shift once in a while!
-
Yes. I learned to drive a stick years ago. Not a problem.
-
only very late at night, and it must be a bloody fast one because the police took my license☺
-
Yes,I do this almost daily for the past 28 years,
-
Well, I could probably get it moving, but I don't know if I could drive in town. My husband tried to teach me years ago. I started at the top of a hill and 20 minutes later,I was at the bottom, having rolled back.I think I'll stick with the automatic. I may get farther. lol
-
I learned to drive on an automatic transmission car. I've owned various cars/trucks and some with manual and some automatic. Having either doesn't matter to me. I synchronize shifting when I drive my S10 Chevy truck because I'm lazy. I drove 18 wheelers with 9, 13, and 15 speed transmissions. Also farm equipment with with manual and automatic, and hydraulic systems. The best transmission to have depends on what you're going to do with it if you have that option.
-
I can drive manual, but prefer automatic.
-
Of course. Do you know how to drive a non-synchronized super 10 transmissioned vehicle?
-
Nope. Nada. Their too much like work. I have enough to deal with in traffic as it is (other drivers) than having to worry about gears, clutches, and shifting. I'll keep my automatic.
-
I haven't driven a stick in about 12 years. My left Achilles tendon is thankful for that. ;) I think I could still drive one but my clutch work would be quite herky jerky.
-
In theory, yes, in practise, not so much. I've had very little experience driving one, and even less in real traffic. I do want to learn though, it's silly that I can't.
-
Yes I don't ever want anything but a stick!!! I was sooo mad at my mom for making me learn... now I love her for it!!!
-
I have always driven a manual, and always will ...I would fall asleep driving an auto!!
-
Yes, I can, I had to teach myself when I was 16 if I wanted to have my own vehicle.
-
yes its my preferred method
-
no. i wish i knew how though.
-
I could drive a stick shift real good in the past. Don't know about now.
-
When I started driving there were a few automatic transmissions around along with fluid drive (a Chrysler trany)I learned on stick shift trucks that had to be double clutched as well as pickups and standard cars. I now own a pickup with a 5 speed std. I've been driving since I was 13 and had my drivers license at 14...
-
I only drive stick shift, you have better control of the gear ratio, and it does give better mileage. We had to learn stick and automatic in drivers education in high school.
-
I initially learned on a manual and after several automatics my present vehicle is a manual. Had forgotten how much fun they can be and it really does make a difference in gas mileage.
-
Heck yeh, although i havnt driven one for a while as my brother crashed ours
-
Seems I"m the only one here that CAN'T drive a stick shift. With what cars cost I can't see getting anything but an automatic. Sticks make you drive the car, the car should drive me instead. Call me weird, but I'll never buy anything but an automatic. The new truck sitting out in our driveway will be nice to ride in but I will never drive it. Ummmmmmmmmmmm
-
Nope, I can't even drive which is pathetic coz I'm 19, but I'm scared I might take someones life... which is why I never get in the drivers seat... So... A manual car is beyond any of my capabilities right now. :(
-
I can drive a manual transmission very well, thank you kindly. For all of you that think you have it down pat, try improving your downshifts. Learning how to heel-toe downshift is essential on the racetrack, but is also very helpful in the winter. It reduces wear on the car, increases your level of smoothness and control, and means you are always in the proper gear! To heel-toe downshift, you must somehow catch the gas pedal with your right foot as you are braking and downshifting, then, when the revs match, release the clutch suddenly. Once you've mastered that, go even easier on your transmission and do a real tap-dance: double-clutch heel-toe downshift. Think I'm crazy? Check it out on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. It's not the easiest thing to master, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be super-glad you did! You'll be showing off your instantaneous and very-cool-sounding downshifts to all of your friends. Cheers, NKG
-
Yes. I live in the UK. Most of our cars are manual.
-
I love stick...I always felt I had better control of the car....I miss it....
-
Yes i can drive real cars :-P
-
I can't drive yet, but since all our family cars have been manual, I'm guessing I'm going to have to learn when I take driving lessons. So few schools offer it these days!!
-
yeah, I can drive the car stick shift and, er, the other kind, too (wink, wink!)
-
kind of.lol
-
I sure can!
-
every girl should know!
-
Yes. but i can;t think of a witty/stupid/clever comment to put after
-
I just bought a second hand, 1988 Bronko stick shift four wheel drive. Last time I drove a stick shift, I drove it into the bay. However, apprently I never forgot how to use one. From the get go I drove like I've been useing a stick shift all my life. Maybe it's the shape of it, kind of like a joy stick.
-
Of course, and my kids are rather upset that I make them learn as well. It's a useful skill, and if you spend time outside of North America odds are you won't find many automatics. All things equal I prefer a stick to an automatic.
-
Most cars here in England are what you call stick shift?! (manual to us) Ive never driven an automatic so i cant compare the 2,but i find it easy.
-
i would prefer to drive a stick, better gas mileage, more control over the cars engine, more fun
-
I prefer a manual transmission, and for my own use, I refuse to buy an automatic.
-
Why yes I can...
-
I would love to learn how to drive one, hopefully since i know to to drive it most likely should not be a problem for me.
-
Yes, my parents insisted that I learn how to drive a standard transmission.
-
Yes. My first car was a 1965 Volkswagen Bug and it was a stick shift. It was a very fun little car to run around town in. When I joined the Army I was always picked to drive the big trucks because I was one of about 5 people in my unit that could drive a stick shift.
-
Yes i can drive a stick shift took about 5 hours to learn. i could also preform on any type of hill. I much rather prefer stick way more reliable then an automatic, and i love them
-
i learned how to drive on a manual!!
-
Heh yeah it's funny, I taught my wife to drive, she later taught me to drive stick.
-
Yes, since I was 16. It comes in handy.
-
Sure do. I learned on a car that had a 3 speed, on the column.
-
Hell Yeah..and I love driving a standard car on the highway and open road, but kind of annoying in the city:)
-
Yes, :0
-
Has it become that uncommon??? I taught my son to drive a stick; it seemed like a good idea at the time.
-
Yep. Learned on a 5-speed and both cars I've owned have all had a standard transmission.
-
You mean one with a gearbox? It's the only type I'll drive. I hate automatics, there's no clutch!
-
Yes, That was all I used to own.
-
Of course. Any kind, including the super 10.
-
Nope, want to teach me?
-
Yes, even the 20 speed Unimog. +5
-
Yes, on account of a new clutch
-
Yes. I took my drivers test with my dads tow truck.:):)
-
AND CAN FLAT SHIFT!!! TOO ")
-
Yeah, but I prefer to drive car.
-
yes, my first car was a vw bug
-
Yes, but I've never tried automatic.
-
Yes, everyone should learn manual before going on to automatic.
-
Yes my brothers car had stick and I drove it all the time.
-
Yes, I can.
-
Yes!!! I prefer a manual. We had to drive 150 to buy my car cause it was the closest place that sold it in a standard.
-
Yes, most people in Britain learn to drive manual cars. Among a lot of my friends and colleagues there's a lot of stigma attached to only being able to drive an automatic.
-
yes but not rhd stick.
-
Learned to drive on "three-on-the-tree". Owned many 4 and 5 speed cars.
-
Yes ... from small sports cars to big trucks ... __________ ... have you seen some of the new "joystick" cars??? Mercedes & Toyota are the first ones, several others are being designed ... .
-
Yes I can.It is the norm here Automatics are less popular. I have only had two 4x4 automatics but the current one has a sports box so I can force gear changes towing horses downhill. It is hilly here. If you take your test in an automatic, you have to take another to drive manual.
-
yes, one summer I took driver's ed, and the car was a stick, the passenger on the right was the teacher. he had duplicate controls of the clutch brake and accelerator. he just reached over and shifted with his left hand. that was a great summer.
