  • The fans turn on by default when the engine light turns on (Better safe than sorry) Take your car to an autozone or other name brand auto parts store. They have a scan tool that can read the engine codes and tell you what may be the problem. They will normally do this for free. Good Luck
  • JUST WONDERING IF YOU FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM, CAUSE I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 01 MONTE PACE CAR. EMAIL BILLYBAGS03@AOL.COM
  • I had the same problem, plus the a/c would not come on. I replaced the temperature sending unit and disconnected the battery (to clear the computer). Problem solve. (Note the temperature sending unit has a two wire connector, located next to the thermostat)
  • Throw the car in the junk yard because thats what im about to do my car jerks when im on the highway my gas hand dosent work the list goes on this car is a piece of junk it looks great on the outside and the inside but under the hood garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • you need to replace your intake manifold gaskets. i also have a 2001 monte carlo 3.4 that did the same thing.
  • The thermostat probably needs to be bled, which is a common problem on these cars. I have the same problem in my 2001 SS only when the weather turns cold. As you pull heat from the engine, it lowers the temperature of the block and send an error message to the computer. I think it is a code 390 error or something like that. The check engine light will trigger about every 3 occurrences and then re-set if you avoid drawing heat before the engine is completely warmed up. E-mail me at waxie56@yahoo.com and I can give you more details. Regards, Bob
  • I had same problem, temp gauge was not moving, fans ran after shutting car off, engine light did not come on. Air temp 28 degrees F. My problem was the thermostat. Feel the lower radiator hose when engine is warm, if its cold the thermostat is not opening and therefore the heated water/coolant in the engine block is trapped and not circulating thru the radiator. You will still have heat. The fans are activated by a block sensor when the engine is hot, the fans cool the radiator not the engine. As a result your car can overheat and the temp gauge will still have a very low reading.I assume my engine light did not come on because i was running my heater and the outside air was 28 degrees F. 2001 Monte SS 3.8
  • It is a very simple fix. The same thing happened to my car. I checked the OBDII and it was error code P0128, meaning the thermostat was faulty. I dropped a new one in and it works fine. Replacing the thermostat is very, very easy. The part itself costs about five minutes and the repair would take about 30 min to an hour at most. All you have to do is take out to screws holding down the housing and put the new one in.
  • It is the thermostat. No doubt. Had that happen on my way to Arkansas from Ohio. Had to partially cover the radiator to get it to get to temp. If you drive it too long without the engine getting to temp you can foul the plugs. Once I got there I replaced the stat and its all good.
  • I just had this issue with my 2001 Monte Carlo LS 3.4L!! I'm not 100% sure if it was the thermostat that caused it or the coolant temperature sensor. I changed both since they were so close together and I haven't had that problem again and it's been since November!!
  • u have a bad sensor have some one look at and plug it to the pc and diagnos it
