  • The caucuses, held in January of the election year, involve people gathering in homes or public places and choosing their candidates, rather than casting secret ballots as is done in a primary election. The national and international media give Iowa (and New Hampshire) much of the attention accorded the national candidate selection process, which gives Iowa voters enormous leverage. Those who enter the caucus race often expend enormous effort to reach voters in each of Iowa's 99 counties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa
  • Caucuses are big get-togethers and discussions. The old Vikings called them "Things". Politically, in the US, they are when party delegates and candidates get together for a rather farcical "mock election" to see who looks the best. They pick unrealistic places like Iowa and New Hampshire to have "pretend" elections. How the candidates do in these phony elections are supposed to tell them who the best horse to run should be. The Demos are notoriously bad at picking horses that do well in these games. They forget that there are forty-eight other states who also vote in the national election,..the only one that counts.
