Help answer this question below.
There are two different kinds of cords, one is a full cord and the other is called a face cord. Neither of them are measured by how many logs. it is by how big a stack it makes.
A full cord is a large amount of wood. It measures 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by eight feet long (4' x 4' x 8') and has a volume of 128 cubic feet.
A face cord or rick of wood is four feet high by eight feet long and is as wide as the individual firewood pieces, but averages 16 inches wide. A 16-inch wide face cord is equal to one-third of a full cord.
Two full-size pick-up truck loads (8 foot box) equals one full cord, whether the wood is stacked carefully so it is about level with the truck box sides, or is thrown into the truck box with the top of the pile about as high as the cab.
Four compact pick-up truck loads (6 foot box) equals one full cord of wood, whether the wood is stacked carefully so it is about level with the truck box sides, or is thrown into the truck box with the top of the pile about as high as the cab.
I don't know how many pieces it would be, but it's generally a stack 4 feet tall by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long.
I've never seen fire wood cut into perfect sizes so you have to understand that there is a lot of air between the pieces after being stacked, which is not a bad thing when you consider you want air to circulate. However, a cord by definition is 128 cubic feet regardless of the dimensions. The pieces might be cut 20 inches long...never are they all the same length though. In any case a rough estimate will be 4x4x8 feet respectively with a little left over to compensate for air. Most people will deliver a little more than they should just to make sure the customer is happy.
Everyone should know by now that a cord is 128 cubic feet. If we can assume that split firewood is 18" long, 6" wide, and 4" thick (approximately 1/4 cubic foot), then we have 4 x 128 = 512 pieces of wood in a cord.
Now, don't hold my feet to your fire. Measure your own typical log, and do the arithmatic. I'll bet I'm close enough.
I think it goes more by dimension of the stack than the number of pieces.
