My newbie friend has a Spyder Xtra which works pretty well.

What is your style? Are you a sniper or spray-and-pray? (Most likely spray-and-pray if you are a n00b... but not always.) How big is the course? How big are you? What is your budget?

I started out with a spyder shutter , then went to a Spider AMG both suited me very well and now Im awaiting my Angel G7 tomorrow.Honestly the best thing is pick a gun your comfortable with and try and get friends ,co-workers (bosses work real well here) and other new guys to play you, so you dont get hit by some of thees 35 ball per second fellows. Plus you can bring in a new class to the sport.

I just recently got a BT-4 Combat. I got a hopper and 2,000 paintballs all for under 200 bucks. It works perfecty fine with alot of power and you can upgrade it with alot of added stuff. I would suggest this gun.

You cannot rate a marker (paintball gun) without first defining the field. If you have played in both speedball and woodsball games you will understand that while some markers are good for woodsball, they are certainly not the best for speedball. If you want to play speedball - a clean tight field with loads of artificial structures, you want a marker that is light weight, relatively short in length and can sustain a high rate of fire (you want to be able to shift from a left to a right firing position and back again really fast). For this game an Intimidator, Spyder, Ego (check out the new Tippmann Triumph) etc. will do quite nicely. However if you want to play woodsball – field with trees, rocks, wet ditches and patches of open field you want a marker that will fire accurately over relatively long distances and can handle physical punishment like being dropped, mud and neglect (reflect on the AK-47). For this game you want a Tippmann A5 or X7 with a flatline barrel (for range) and for higher rates of fire, a response trigger (if you need durability) or H.E. E-Grip (if you never crawl over the mud).

a good gun for you would probably be a ion xe form smartparts or a slg ul form proto. both guns are under $300 very good guns for beginners.

you want to play in the woods so you need tough. Someone that hides and sprays isnt a sniper, you're either a sleeper or a ghost flanker. (my position). a sleeper can take a larger marker like a tippmann A5 or a BT combat. modify these with stocks and long barrels. if your a ghost flanker try something smaller like a smart parts ion or an autococker.
