  • The Bible of course. Concentrate on the New Testament for the younger ones, and gradually show how specific passages in the Old Testament point to Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church serves to guide interpretation of the Bible according to the faith of our fathers, and is indispensible. To my goddaughter I gave an abbreviated form of the CCC (perhaps Mary J Graham's?), which she found somewhat overwhelming. I managed to find a small booklet that was much briefer, which I believe was based on the penny catechism, distributed by a streetside nun. Your parish ought to have resources or access to resources that you can draw upon.

  • First of all, if you want to give your child a complete understanding of the faith, these are the things the should know about: 1. The beliefs of the Church (foundation is the Creed) 2. How to live their faith (Morality, foundation is the ten Commandments 3. How to celebrate their faith (foundation is the sacraments, but don't forget the Liturgical Year!) 4. How to Pray (Foundation is the Our Father) 5. The story of salvation (from the Bible) 6. The history of the Church (foundation is the lives of the saints, and the church councils) For teaching beliefs try "St. Patrick's Summer," as well as children's catechisms. Many children's books have elements of morality - just keep your eyes open and talk about the actions of the characters. There are some picture books out there that help Children understand the Mass and other sacraments. Also, learn more about the Liturgical Year. For Prayer, teach them the basic prayer and pray with them often. Children's Bibles as Leah mentioned above. Storybooks on saints, or for older kids chapter books like those by Louis de Wohl or the series put out by Ignatius press. Hope it helps!
  • Start with "My Very First Bible", then move to more complex stories of the Bible, until they are around 11 when they can have the Good News Bible. I first read the whole Bible when I was around 12.

  • No book is good which warps a child's brain, and risks leading them into a depraved and wasted life. Religions were only needed when primitive illiterate and uneducated people needed to be coerced into behaving in an acceptable manner to satisfy the control freaks.
