They don't usually call...then send a letter stating the job has been filled. I prefer to hear something..letter or call that the job has been filled.

I'd rather they told me, just a call or a letter won't kill them, I took the time to apply :-)

yep would rather know so that i can keep my efforts going in the right direction

I'd ratehr know.. and know why I wasn't hired.

I prefer to get a call telling me the company is not interested in hiring me. It's a way of giving me closure. At least, there would be no long, agonizing wait for that call asking me to come to their office for an interview. I think that's the professional way of dealing with rejected applicants. Better to tell them right away than to give them false hopes. EDIT (response to comment below) I think it depends from company to company, and from HR manager to HR manager. One co-worker of mine told me that when he applied for a certain job, the HR manager informed him that they had received his resume. Diligent huh? On the other hand, you would never hear any reply at all from some companies and HR managers.

yeah so you can go on and look for more

Definitely a call or a letter, that way I won't waste time or possibly pass on another job while I was waiting to hear from the first one. I've always thought a letter thanking me for my interview was the professional way to handle things, however, in my own business, it's not always feasible (due to the many applicants and the time constraints I'm always under), so I can definitely see why it doesn't always happen.
