Users cannot directly rate an answer as the top answer - it is done by the system calculating all the individual ratings. If you can give more than one point per question or answer and you want to give less than your maximum, hold your mouse over the plus or minus sign and in a second or two you will get a drop-down list of points you can give, just choose which one you want to give for the question or answer and that will be your rating for it.

Each member of Answerbag is a critic too. Before I post an answer I read the others. Sometimes the same thing I was going to write is there, and i always give them my highest rating (which happens to be +4 now). I will hand out ratings from 1-4 based on how acturate and complete the answers are. if the answer is wrong I ignore it. If it's offensive or misleading, I may assign negative points. Each critic has different rating points, up to +6 I think, to assign out on each answer. Comments can be left to support or refute details. If everyone does this then the best answers will get more points and rise to the top.

You give it the most points you can, and hope others feel the same way and give it more points.

It is an organic, automatic thing. People read questions, read other peoples answers, and the answer that seems the most on-point and that resonates with those who read it receive points. If you and enough other AB members award big points to someone's answer, then it becomes "top answer"! :)
