  • This is an old 'puzzle', to which the answer usually goes as follows: Hit yourself with the plank until you are sore. Use the saw to cut the wood in two halves. Two halves make a whole. Go through the hole to escape.   Of course, this is not lateral thinking but equivocation. Lateral thinking would provide no solutions, for it is still bound by the laws of logic, just not conventional thought patterns.   Sorry for being so snarky about this (the puzzle is, after all, an interesting linguistic trick), but people calling this sort of reasoning 'lateral thinking' is a pet peeve of mine. To quote Randall Munroe, "communicating badly then acting smug when you are misunderstood is not wit".
